BI-MU: a 70-year history

The 35th edition of the fair will take place from 13 to 16 October 2026 at FIERAMILANO RHO.

From 13 to 16 October 2026, fieramilano Rho will host the 35th edition of BI-MU, the leading Italian event dedicated to the manufacturing industry of metal cutting and metal forming machine tools, robots, automation, digital and additive manufacturing, auxiliary and enabling technologies.

Promoted by UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE, the association of Italian machine tool, robot and automation manufacturers, and organized by EFIM-ENTE FIERE ITALIANE MACCHINE, BI-MU is the only international trade show in Italy, the first to open up to the world of connectivity for industry and, this year too, updates its offering to meet market needs, presenting a special edition with which it celebrates a 70-year history.

In this sense, 35.BI-MU has chosen "Where it all begins" as its slogan, underscoring the central role of machine tools, which enable much of manufacturing, and the long, unwavering tradition of this exhibition event.

The organization of the exhibition has undergone no interruptions in its 70 years of activity, making BI-MU the reference event for manufacturing industry operators who, in the exhibition pavilions, observe the production technology offerings to plan their investments. 35.BI-MU is also a sustainable event, managed and organized according to the principles of environmental, economic, and social sustainability, certified ICIM ISO 20121.

The protagonists of the exhibition will be the latest-generation, digitalized and interconnected machines and technologies that have integrated 4.0 solutions and automation systems capable of enabling typical digital factory processes.

In addition, 35.BI-MU will focus on 7 technological themes: RobotHeart, dedicated to robotics, automation, components, systems, and artificial intelligence, sponsored by SIRI; AMItaly, dedicated to the entire additive manufacturing supply chain (machines, materials, and post-processing software), sponsored by AITA; BI-MU Digital, digital solutions for the smart factory, with advanced software, connectivity and data security technologies, sensors, and self-adaptive systems; Metrology and Testing, which offers measuring instruments, testing machines, and artificial vision; Power4Machines, dedicated to components for mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic transmission, sponsored by FEDERTEC; Heat and surface treatments, plants and systems to improve material performance, and, new to this edition, Tool Tech, dedicated to advanced tools for efficient, high-precision production.

The exhibition offering will be rounded out by an overview of Revamping & Retrofitting, presenting a selection of machines and systems appropriately regenerated and enhanced to meet the needs of the second-life market, complementary to the "new" market.

Alongside the exhibition offering, there will be in-depth cultural exploration, as per tradition, through a rich program of meetings, curated by organizers and exhibitors, hosted in the BI-MUpiù arena.

Added to this is the Education & Job project, created with the aim of bringing together, even during the event, the world of schools and businesses that have a strong need for motivated young people prepared to work in the factories of the future. 35.BI-MU will offer a special program of initiatives dedicated to students; The flagship initiative will be the second edition of ROBOTGAMES, the robotics and automation competition for high school students.

New for the 35th edition is the BI-MU FUTURTECH Awards 2026: an award that celebrates the most innovative solutions in manufacturing. Open to all exhibitors, the competition recognizes excellence in mechanical technology, digitalization, and sustainability. A jury of experts will select the winners through technical evaluations and visits to the stands.

Finally, the organizers have already launched the program of events leading up to the event: the "Machine Tool and Mechanics Convention" at the Alfa Romeo Museum and the "Speed, Innovation, Value: the event that accelerates your additive business" conference hosted at the Mille Miglia Museum in Brescia, which were held in June.

Machine tool orders remained stable in the third quarter (+1.1%)

Foreign orders (-7.7%); domestic orders (+12.4%)Riccardo Rosa, president of UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE, stated: “domestic demand is still too weak despite the “plus sign”, no improvement in the automotive sector and “uncertainty regarding Made in USA” are the critical issues that accompany the daily work of Italian manufacturers, who are worried about the near future. The economic policy tools that government authorities are defining for the two-year period 2026-2027 will be fundamental”.In the third quarter of 2025, the machine tool orders index developed by the UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE Study & Business Culture Centre was stationary (+1.1%) compared to the period July-September 2024. In absolute value, the index stood at 53.3 (base 100 in 2021).In particular, orders collected on the domestic market increased by 12.4% compared to the third quarter of 2024, for an absolute value of 15.4.On the foreign market, order collection decreased by 7.7% compared to the same period of the previous year. The absolute value of the index stood at 87.1.Riccardo Rosa, president of UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE, stated: “although this latest UCIMU index survey confirms the positive trend in domestic demand, the absolute value of the index shows that it is still very weak. In fact, the decline in cross-border activity is barely offset by the recovery of the domestic market.”“The context in which we find ourselves operating,” continued Riccardo Rosa, “is truly complicated. Europe is deeply suffering from the German crisis and the geopolitical instability caused by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In particular, the electric transition of the engine has triggered a significant downsizing of manufacturing activity: European carmakers are not investing because it is unclear what will happen in the future and companies in the supply chain announce plant closures and staff cuts almost daily.”"On the other hand, we Italian manufacturers see that the downsizing of our main outlet sector, namely the automotive sector, cannot be covered by investments in so-called alternative sectors. For this reason, we believe it is essential, to ward off the spectre of industrial desertification in the Old Continent, to extend the transition to green mobility and to thoughtfully consider, at the level of EU institutions, alternative forms of propulsion capable of ensuring low emissions and, at the same time, safeguarding production, factories, and jobs."“Looking overseas,” continued the president of UCIMU, “the United States has held firm so far. However, we are seeing some cases of Italian companies having difficulty delivering machinery to the USA due to tariffs. There is great concern on this front too, as the American administration's attitude has cast heavy uncertainty on the international market, effectively causing a slowdown in export activity, as our order index clearly shows.”“On the domestic front,” concluded president Riccardo Rosa, “we know that the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy and the Ministry of Economy and Finance are committed to defining a new industrial policy program that should support companies over the next two years. The less than positive experience of Industry 5.0, which only in its final phase brought interesting results, must serve as a warning to ensure that companies can have a truly useful and effective tool to support the updating of Italian production plants."”We appreciate the idea of a single measure, although we prefer a tax credit. However, we request that a bonus be included for Made in EU production. Finally, the duration and financial resources needed to support the transformation of our factories will be crucial, at a time when AI and digitalization, if properly targeted, can make a difference. Regarding the duration, Riccardo Rosa concluded, we request that the measure be implemented from the beginning of the year, avoiding the exasperated wait-and-see effect we experienced with Industry 5.0. Regarding the funding, the pressure from Asian supply and general instability, the primary factor driving the freeze on investments in capital goods, require serious intervention in terms of overall financial resources to support the competitiveness of our manufacturing sector."

Machine tools, new estimates for 2025: production flat (+0.2%). the decline in exports (-8.9%) weigh

DOMESTIC MARKET RECOVERING BUT STILL TOO WEAK (+14.1%)Italians, with 140 companies present, were the second largest foreign delegation at EMO HANNOVER 2025, which took place from 22 to 26 September in the pavilions of the German fair. This demonstration of strength demonstrates how much the Italian machine tool, robotics and automation industry believes in this exhibition event capable of attracting operators from all over the world and therefore how essential activity on foreign markets is. The next EMO will take place in Italy from 4 to 8 October 2027.During the event, UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE, the association of Italian machine tool, robot and automation manufacturers, presented, in the usual press conference held on Tuesday 23 morning, the 2025 forecasts relating to the Italian industry in the sector recently revised by the Centro Studi & Cultura di Impresa.Riccardo Rosa, President of UCIMU, commented: "Based on the latest order intake and deliveries by Italian manufacturers, relating to the second quarter of 2025, the Research Center had to revise the data presented just a few months ago. At the beginning of the year, we expected a slight growth in production supported by exports, a growth that the current context does not allow us to confirm today."Production is expected to be 6,340 million euros (+0.2%), thus stable compared to the 2024 figure. Weighing on the final result are the decline in exports, on the one hand, and the weakness of activity on the domestic market, on the other.On the international front, sales of Italian manufacturers abroad will stop at 3,895 million (-8.9%) compared to the previous year.On the domestic front, however, deliveries will grow by 19.1% to 2,445 million, driven by the timid recovery in domestic consumption, which is expected to reach 4,230 million (+14.1%). Despite the double-digit increases, the estimated absolute values for these two economic indicators remain decidedly low.“Furthermore, continued President Riccardo Rosa, “what our Research Center finds is that it is not possible to identify a real trend for the sector. Rather, we are seeing a trend with upward and downward oscillations, which reflects the chaotic situation of the context.”With reference to exports, in the period January-June 2025 (latest available data), Italian sales of machine tools alone decreased by 13.3% compared to the first half of 2024. The decline was widespread. Poland, Mexico, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia were exceptions. It must be said, however, that the latter two, despite significant increases, still account for decidedly low values of Made in Italy machines.The main outlet markets for Italian products were: the United States (292 million euros, -4.2%); Germany (127 million, -28.1%); Poland (97 million, +8.3%); France (97 million, -7.5%); India (85 million, -14.1%).“The data, commented Riccardo Rosa, “tell us that Germany is suffering, and with it, Europe and Italy, whose companies are integrated into German value chains. Compared to Germany, the situation in the automotive sector is particularly difficult, paying the price for the transition to electric motors but also for the construction crisis. The hope is that the government program, worth 46 billion euros and designed to revive the country's economy, can effectively give manufacturing a boost.”"Looking overseas, in the first six months of this year, despite President Trump's constant announcements and retractions regarding tariffs, the US remains our primary export market. The situation is decidedly fluid and still unclear. Beyond the tariff rates, what is most worrying is the uncertainty this approach has generated among industry operators, as demonstrated by the slowdown in the entire export system, not only to the United States but also to the rest of the world.""For Italy, concluded Riccardo Rosa, "what we have observed in recent months is a slight, but still too weak, improvement in market sentiment, influenced by the clarification and simplification of Transition 5.0. This is also confirmed by the trend in months of assured production, which in the first half of 2025 stood at 6.6: better than in 2024, but still far from the results of previous years. In light of this, as we approach the final part of 2025, which coincides with the end of the operations of Industry 4.0 and Transition 5.0, we emphasize the need for a new industrial policy plan to support businesses from 2026 onwards."UCIMU has already expressed its willingness to participate in the working group of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, which should lead to the drafting of a simplified provision that—as announced by the Minister himself—combines 4.0 and 5.0, facilitating their use by businesses, a prerequisite for their adoption.
